Arms Industry Museum in Eibar

To celebrate its 675th anniversary, the Arms Industry has prepared a video on the origins of Eibar, based on Javier Elorza’s book Eibar: orígenes y evolución, s.XIV al s.XVI and with illustrations by Leire Kareaga over the original drawing by Xabier Untzetabarrenetxea. Both the videos and the illustrations can be seen in the Museum entrance throughout the month of February.

Founded on 5th February 1346 with the Municipal Charter granted by Alphonse XI of Castile, Eibar has always been characterised for its industrial activity. What started out as mills and foundries later became smithies, which were at the origin of Eibar’s arms industry. With time, these early arms factories and workshops grew into major industries, thereby creating Eibar’s important weapon-making tradition.

During the 20th century, many of these factories diversified their production towards other objects. Several of these brands, such as Alfa, Orbea and El Casco, are still recognised today.

Eibar is still a world reference in the arms industry, and a synonym of quality in the objects it manufactures and exports.

Admission to the Museum will be free of charge for the whole month.
