The Museum's Blades. Edged Weapons

16 May - 20 October 2024

The Basque weapons industry is famous for its firearm production. However, edged weapons were also produced, although they never achieved the same degree of fame as the former.

On this occasion, edged weapons have been brought out from the museum's storeroom to be displayed in a new temporary exhibition.

Of all the pieces, only one of them bears the Eibar stamp. This does not mean that few weapons were produced in the area. For this reason, some items made in Eibar have been found in other collections in the Basque Country, specifically at the Arms Museum of Álava and the San Telmo Museum. This provides a more complete perspective on the weaponry crafted in these workshops.

As part of this exhibition, 18 May at 12 noon, we will hold a historic fencing demonstration at the museum, using replicas of weapons (swords and bayonets) that are part of the exhibition. This event is made possible by the members of the CSE Fencing Club of Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Sala de Armas Ignota of San Sebastián.

This collection was curated by Iker Alejo and Francisco Peña Castresana. José Maria Peláez Valle also collaborated.

Inauguration: 16 May at 7PM.
